Liver Transplant in India
Liver is the largest gland
in our body, and an important metabolic organ which carries out many essential
biological functions. The liver is a wedge-shaped, reddish-brown in color with
two lobes of different size and shape. The approximate weight of a human liver
is 1.5 kilograms. It is in the upper right quadrant of abdomen, just below the
diaphragm.
The liver is connected with
two blood vessels, namely, the hepatic artery and the portal vein. The hepatic
artery carries the oxygen rich blood from the aorta through the celiac trunk,
while the portal vein carries the blood which is rich in digested nutrients
from gastrointestinal tract, from the spleen and pancreas. These blood vessels
are further divided into small capillaries which lead to hepatic lobules. These
hepatic lobules are the functional units of the liver.
The important functions of
the liver include production of hormones, metabolizes carbohydrates, proteins
and fats which is further used by our body, stores nutrients like glucose and
glycogen which are energy sources and the vitamins which are later to be used
by the body. It cleans harmful substances out of the blood, gets rid of the old
red blood cells, composes blood clotting factors, and makes bile that helps in
digestion of food.
Liver diseases can be
genetic. Liver problems may cause due to various reasons that damage the liver
like viruses, fungal infections, alcohol use, and obesity. Hepatitis is a type
of inflammation of the liver and is the most common condition of liver disease.
Liver damage may also cause by consumption of drugs, especially the ones which
are used to treat cancer.
Symptoms of damage liver
includes pale stools, dark urine, jaundice, swelling of abdomen, bruising and
bleeding and pain in the upper right quadrant of the abdomen.
Liver transplant is a
surgical procedure where a failed liver is replaced with a healthy liver that
is donated by another person. One can receive a whole liver from donor who has
been recently declared dead or can receive a part of a liver from a living
person. A divided liver grows to full size with time. Conditions may occur that
damage the liver which leads to liver cirrhosis, which further leads to liver
failure which can be a life-threatening condition. Liver transplant is required
when there is liver failure, whether its acute or chronic also during primary
liver cancer. Liver treatment is the only option for people with liver failure.
Early treatment may provide enough time to heal the liver. About 8,000 people a
year receive liver transplant. Top Liver Transplant doctors in India helped
